The Tests, Lessons and Oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties offered by Sat\u00adurn in the Signs is some\u00adthing I always dis\u00adcuss with my clients, as it is a major indi\u00adca\u00adtor for their life\u2019s work. Much the same, the move\u00adment of Sat\u00adurn through the Signs of the Zodi\u00adac, which takes about 29 years, pro\u00advides us with guid\u00adance year by year for one and for all of what is the chal\u00adlenge in that time.<\/p>\n

For the last cou\u00adple of years, Sat\u00adurn was mov\u00ading through its own sign of Capri\u00adcorn, and the test and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty the world encoun\u00adtered was sim\u00adply this. How respon\u00adsi\u00adble have we been in meet\u00ading our need to care for one anoth\u00ader? We have moved from a way of life of sim\u00adple hunters and gath\u00aders to a com\u00adplex social order, with a vast hier\u00adar\u00adchy of social struc\u00adtures, rang\u00ading from the fam\u00adi\u00adly unit, to our com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties and regions, and on up to nation\u00adal and inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions that we formed to meet one another\u2019s needs. The test of Sat\u00adurn was how well do we ful\u00adfill our var\u00adi\u00adous roles in the hier\u00adar\u00adchies of meet\u00ading needs; did we act with wis\u00addom and ful\u00adfill our respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties to one anoth\u00ader. The prin\u00adci\u00adpal focus of Sat\u00adurn con\u00adcerned the forms of our roles and rela\u00adtion\u00adships, but now we need to con\u00adsid\u00ader the con\u00adtent of our way of life too.<\/p>\n

This year, Sat\u00adurn has begun its two plus year jour\u00adney through the Sign of Aquar\u00adius. What is our test and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty now? What I hope you will see is that this test and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty of Sat\u00adurn in Aquar\u00adius speaks direct\u00adly to the essen\u00adtial char\u00adac\u00adter of any soci\u00adety and cul\u00adture, but for us espe\u00adcial\u00adly with regards to the foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal core of the Unit\u00aded States of Amer\u00adi\u00adca. It is by look\u00ading to our ori\u00adgins, look\u00ading to our \u201croots\u201d, that we can see what we built our nation upon. We can see how we have been guid\u00aded and cen\u00adtered upon that which we hold in com\u00admon, and that this reminder can point the way to what this peri\u00adod of time holds for us, and why I believe it holds out the promise of a re-birth of the dream that is America.<\/p>\n

Dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtion of Independence<\/strong>
\nIn the Dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtion of Inde\u00adpen\u00addence, the rad\u00adi\u00adcal nature of what was being estab\u00adlished by the found\u00ading of our enter\u00adprise, that we were estab\u00adlish\u00ading a new kind of human order, of cre\u00adat\u00ading a new form of human soci\u00adety, was beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly expressed when Jef\u00adfer\u00adson wrote, \u201c\u2026And for the sup\u00adport of this Dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtion, with a firm reliance on the pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of Divine Prov\u00adi\u00addence, we mutu\u00adal\u00adly pledge to each oth\u00ader our Lives, our For\u00adtunes, and our sacred Honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

They (and we) were form\u00ading a new com\u00adpact of men (at that time), who in agree\u00adment among them\u00adselves, decid\u00aded to unite based upon their com\u00admon needs and inter\u00adests, and to mutu\u00adal\u00adly sup\u00adport one anoth\u00ader, in order to meet one another\u2019s needs in a freely cho\u00adsen or self-direct\u00aded manner.<\/p>\n

It was, and is, an extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary state\u00adment for the found\u00ading of a nation. Until this moment, all nation\u00adal sys\u00adtems had been found\u00aded upon a people\u2019s his\u00adto\u00adry as to their loca\u00adtion by geo\u00adgraph\u00adic space, lan\u00adguage, eth\u00adnic\u00adi\u00adty and cul\u00adtur\u00adal her\u00aditage. Those group\u00adings were the \u201cEng\u00adlish\u201d, the \u201cFrench\u201d, the \u201cItal\u00adian\u201d, and for most of the polit\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adstructs over the cen\u00adturies in those lands and through\u00adout the world, this polit\u00adi\u00adcal order was based on rather fixed hier\u00adar\u00adchies of the priv\u00adi\u00adleged in terms of title and land\u00adhold\u00adings. Pow\u00ader was in some \u201cthing\u201d that was inher\u00adit\u00aded or seized by force, but cer\u00adtain\u00adly did not come from \u201cthe peo\u00adple\u201d as a whole.<\/p>\n

Ori\u00adgins of Self-Government<\/strong>
\nSo, where did this belief in a freely deter\u00admined, self-cre\u00adat\u00aded soci\u00adety come from? The major por\u00adtion of the ear\u00adly set\u00adtlers of North Amer\u00adi\u00adca were prin\u00adci\u00adpal\u00adly from Europe, from Eng\u00adland, Hol\u00adland, France. Many had left of their own accord in order to be \u201cfree\u201d of reli\u00adgious per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adtion dur\u00ading the 1600\u2019s and 1700\u2019s, as Europe faced wars and repres\u00adsions by forces for and against Catholic ver\u00adsus Protes\u00adtant beliefs and practices.<\/p>\n

These dis\u00adsi\u00addents had already, for more than a cen\u00adtu\u00adry, expe\u00adri\u00adenced through neces\u00adsi\u00adty the estab\u00adlish\u00adment of self-formed com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties of faith, and many of them had for years engaged in lengthy debates about the nature of human\u00adi\u00adty, about the sources of moral author\u00adi\u00adty, and the bal\u00adance between per\u00adson\u00adal free\u00addom and social responsibilities.<\/p>\n

A new kind of human\u00adi\u00adty, a new age of human\u00adi\u00adty, was emerg\u00ading out of the Protes\u00adtant rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion of the 1500\u2019s and 1600\u2019s, which then led in the 1700\u2019s to anoth\u00ader shift that became known as the \u201cEnlight\u00aden\u00adment\u201d. Eng\u00adlish, French and Dutch set\u00adtlers had been deeply influ\u00adenced by the ris\u00ading belief in indi\u00advid\u00adual moral author\u00adi\u00adty, sev\u00adered from the old hier\u00adar\u00adchi\u00adcal order descend\u00ading from King or Lord to com\u00admon\u00ader, and for some, this led them to ques\u00adtion all author\u00adi\u00adty based upon some\u00adthing exter\u00adnal to human\u00adi\u00adty itself.<\/p>\n

Alex\u00adis De Tocqueville<\/strong>
\nOne of the most illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00ading works on the foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal nature of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan sys\u00adtem was a study by Alex\u00adis De Toc\u00adqueville in his work, \u201cDemoc\u00adra\u00adcy in Amer\u00adi\u00adca\u201d, which was pub\u00adlished in two vol\u00adumes in 1835 and 1840. His\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans and social sci\u00aden\u00adtists to this very day mar\u00advel over his obser\u00adva\u00adtions and insights regard\u00ading \u201cour great exper\u00adi\u00adment\u201d, what was called by our founders a \u201cNew Order for the Cen\u00adturies\u201d. (And, if you have not read De Tocqueville\u2019s obser\u00adva\u00adtions , you can read it online at https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/815\/815\u2011h\/815\u2011h.htm<\/a>).<\/p>\n

One of the defin\u00ading fea\u00adtures he cit\u00aded in his work was this: that what was essen\u00adtial to a self-gov\u00adern\u00ading, demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic sys\u00adtem was the inte\u00adgral bal\u00adance of indi\u00advid\u00adual free\u00addom and social respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. He saw and under\u00adstood that you can only have the true expe\u00adri\u00adence of the one when it is shaped and guid\u00aded by the oth\u00ader (and vice ver\u00adsa). In oth\u00ader words, that indi\u00advid\u00adual free\u00addom and social respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty are nec\u00ades\u00adsary to one anoth\u00ader, they are part of a greater whole that cre\u00adates a tru\u00adly free society.<\/p>\n

He observed that Amer\u00adi\u00adcans formed their soci\u00adety organ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, from the local lev\u00adel on up through a range of vol\u00adun\u00adtary orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions of mutu\u00adal help and sup\u00adport, both sec\u00adu\u00adlar and sec\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan, in realms civ\u00adil and reli\u00adgious. Rather than a top-down order\u00ading of Regal or Author\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan con\u00adtrol imposed by fiat or Divine Right, the peo\u00adple of Amer\u00adi\u00adca assem\u00adbled for self-gov\u00ader\u00adnance because they had to. They were \u201con their own\u201d, mak\u00ading their New World on a dis\u00adtant shore.<\/p>\n

In order to do pro\u00advide for them\u00adselves, they agreed to pre\u00adserve their self-deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion by giv\u00ading up some \u201cfree\u00addom\u201d for the good of the whole, and trust\u00ading in that larg\u00ader whole, which was their col\u00adlec\u00adtive will, to equal\u00adly ensure their indi\u00advid\u00adual free\u00addoms. This was and is rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary, a peo\u00adple gov\u00adern\u00ading them\u00adselves voluntarily.<\/p>\n

Toc\u00adqueville not\u00aded, \u201c\u2026when cit\u00adi\u00adzens are all almost equal, it becomes dif\u00adfi\u00adcult for them to defend their inde\u00adpen\u00addence against the aggres\u00adsions of pow\u00ader. As none of them is strong enough to fight alone with advan\u00adtage, the only guar\u00adan\u00adtee of lib\u00ader\u00adty is for every\u00adone to com\u00adbine forces.\u201d The cit\u00adi\u00adzens of Amer\u00adi\u00adca agreed to form their var\u00adi\u00adous lev\u00adels of civ\u00adil soci\u00adety for their mutu\u00adal ben\u00ade\u00adfit, to meet one another\u2019s needs and to pro\u00adtect their freedoms.<\/p>\n

He not\u00aded, and this is essen\u00adtial for under\u00adstand\u00ading the nature of the cri\u00adsis we face now at the end of this age, that the most crit\u00adi\u00adcal ele\u00adment of our self-gov\u00ader\u00adnance would require this bal\u00adance of Indi\u00advid\u00adual Free\u00addom and Social Respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, and that it could only work if there was a more or less equi\u00adtable dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion of the val\u00adue and wealth with\u00adin the society.<\/p>\n

As de Toc\u00adqueville not\u00aded, as have many oth\u00aders, the strength of Amer\u00adi\u00adca was to be found in its vibrant social mobil\u00adi\u00adty, where unlike the sta\u00adt\u00adic struc\u00adtures of nobil\u00adi\u00adty, priv\u00adi\u00adlege and class in Europe, our social mobil\u00adi\u00adty would pre\u00advent a per\u00adma\u00adnent hier\u00adar\u00adchy of pow\u00ader and wealth from becom\u00ading estab\u00adlished. Toc\u00adqueville observed that if that equi\u00adtable order were to be undone, that would be the begin\u00adning of the end of true democ\u00adra\u00adcy here (or I would argue anywhere).<\/p>\n

Inequal\u00adi\u00adty<\/strong>
\nBut look at Amer\u00adi\u00adca now, where a very few have man\u00adaged to obtain and con\u00adtrol the vast major\u00adi\u00adty of the wealth of the nation. And, most impor\u00adtant\u00adly for the destruc\u00adtion of real social mobil\u00adi\u00adty, they can pass on that wealth to whom they choose. Today, we find, for exam\u00adple, that instead of the top income earn\u00aders mak\u00ading 5 times what the low\u00adest income work\u00aders make, say $100,000 for the top and $20,000 for the bot\u00adtom, we now have a gross\u00adly unequal dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion of income where the top earn\u00aders make at least if not more than 400 times the bot\u00adtom, $8,000,000 ver\u00adsus $20,000. And the very top per\u00adcentiles acquire and secure much of their wealth and pow\u00ader through invest\u00adments yield\u00ading inter\u00adest and div\u00adi\u00addends. And by hold\u00ading that much wealth, the top one per\u00adcent can influ\u00adence the eco\u00adnom\u00adic and polit\u00adi\u00adcal order and shape the laws and reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions in order to rein\u00adforce, retain and make even more inequitable the dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion of wealth and pow\u00ader over time.<\/p>\n

In fact, the wealth and income inequal\u00adi\u00adty in Amer\u00adi\u00adca today rivals that of the late 1920\u2019s. Of all the mem\u00adbers in the G\u20117 nations, America\u2019s eco\u00adnom\u00adic and social order is the most unequal. Since the great reces\u00adsion of 2008-09, only the rich\u00adest mem\u00adbers of our coun\u00adtry have become bet\u00adter off than before, and the vast major\u00adi\u00adty are poor\u00ader, and many are strug\u00adgling to survive.<\/p>\n

For the past 40 years, the growth of incomes for the mid\u00addle and low\u00ader eco\u00adnom\u00adic sec\u00adtors in the US<\/span> has fall\u00aden far behind that of the upper brack\u00adets, and that dream of a mid\u00addle-class life for many Amer\u00adi\u00adcans has become bro\u00adken. For many, they look at their lives and their future, and they know that their lives will be less for\u00adtu\u00adnate than their par\u00adents for the very first time in Amer\u00adi\u00adcan his\u00adto\u00adry. Then they look at their own chil\u00addren and they are filled with sor\u00adrow; there is no bright future there, only a life filled with despair. They ask: what has gone wrong; what have they done wrong? The answer is noth\u00ading; it is not their fault.<\/p>\n

Plu\u00adtoc\u00adra\u00adcy<\/strong>
\nThe truth is Amer\u00adi\u00adca is not a tru\u00adly func\u00adtion\u00ading Democ\u00adra\u00adcy, it has become a Plu\u00adtoc\u00adra\u00adcy, with the overt and covert rule of the extreme\u00adly rich over the many. This is what is tear\u00ading at our social fab\u00adric, divid\u00ading regions and groups from one anoth\u00ader; those regions and groups, that should be com\u00adbin\u00ading to right this wrong, are instead being fur\u00adther ripped apart by false nar\u00adra\u00adtives and dis\u00adtrac\u00adtions. Our agree\u00adment to sac\u00adri\u00adfice our indi\u00advid\u00adual lib\u00ader\u00adty for the com\u00admon good has been bro\u00adken. But it is not by some acci\u00addent of fate or caused by some nat\u00adur\u00adal phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna. It is caused by the very few hold\u00ading the pow\u00ader to make and shape a sys\u00adtem that rein\u00adforces their wealth and power.<\/p>\n

Sat\u00adurn in Aquarius<\/strong>
\nTo bring this back to the Astro\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal world, Sat\u00adurn mov\u00ading through Aquar\u00adius pre\u00adcise\u00adly encap\u00adsu\u00adlates this ques\u00adtion as it has done each time it moves through this sign. It shines a light on the ques\u00adtion of our Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty Spir\u00adit, of our Social Con\u00adscious\u00adness and Con\u00adscience, and the degree to which we are hold\u00ading togeth\u00ader by bal\u00adanc\u00ading our Indi\u00advid\u00adual Free\u00addom and our Social Respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties to one another.<\/p>\n

The answer has always been the same; each time Sat\u00adurn has been in Aquar\u00adius we have been remind\u00aded that we have not been hold\u00ading togeth\u00ader and sup\u00adport\u00ading one anoth\u00ader fair\u00adly. Today, we have become divid\u00aded even more than before because the foun\u00adda\u00adtions of our democ\u00adra\u00adcy have been shat\u00adtered by the extremes of wealth and want. This is what Sat\u00adurn in Aquar\u00adius is call\u00ading for, a return to a tru\u00adly sup\u00adport\u00adive com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty which will fos\u00adter greater oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty for each and every indi\u00advid\u00adual to real\u00adize their fuller poten\u00adtial, and which will equal\u00adly ben\u00ade\u00adfit that very com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, for it will ben\u00ade\u00adfit one and all. We must reaf\u00adfirm the prin\u00adci\u00adple of equal oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty, to cre\u00adate a social order that is fair and just, and which will be based upon a more equi\u00adtable shar\u00ading in the wealth that we, every one of us, create.<\/p>\n

Look at the pre\u00advi\u00adous years of Sat\u00adurn in Aquar\u00adius, and you will see this pat\u00adtern of social and eco\u00adnom\u00adic reform for over 100 years: 1991\u20131994 (Clin\u00adton), 1962\u20131964 (JFK<\/span>), 1932\u20131935 (FDR<\/span>), and 1903\u20131906 (Ted\u00addy Roo\u00adsevelt). In each of these peri\u00adods, some more and some less, the eco\u00adnom\u00adic order was re-ordered, pow\u00ader was re-dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted as laws were enact\u00aded, poli\u00adcies and mech\u00ada\u00adnisms forged that restored (for a time) a more just and equal society.<\/p>\n

But the chal\u00adlenge we face now, with not only Sat\u00adurn mov\u00ading through Aquar\u00adius, but expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading for the first time, the return of Plu\u00adto to its posi\u00adtion in the chart of the Unit\u00aded States, means that this reck\u00adon\u00ading, this realign\u00adment or reform will be much more con\u00adse\u00adquen\u00adtial than any we have ever faced. And that is very good because this coun\u00adtry, and our com\u00adpact with one anoth\u00ader needs to be reborn.<\/p>\n

Path to Restoration<\/strong>
\nWe only need to remem\u00adber how this great exper\u00adi\u00adment in Democ\u00adra\u00adcy and Self-Gov\u00adern\u00adment began. We have to restore the bal\u00adance between the Indi\u00advid\u00adual and Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty Respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. Just like our founders, we are begin\u00adning to forge a new com\u00adpact, a new agree\u00adment between one anoth\u00ader. Like FDR<\/span>\u2019s New Deal, we will restore our ways and means of meet\u00ading one another\u2019s needs by reform\u00ading our social order.<\/p>\n

Much of this is already hap\u00adpen\u00ading. Peo\u00adple always ask, \u201cwhere is the New World com\u00ading from?\u201d And the answer is, \u201cwe are mak\u00ading it now\u201d. At the local, region\u00adal and state lev\u00adels, actions and poli\u00adcies and pro\u00adgrams are being cre\u00adat\u00aded as we help one anoth\u00ader through this cri\u00adsis. We are tak\u00ading actions, chang\u00ading our pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adties, and being remind\u00aded once again about what is tru\u00adly most impor\u00adtant. We had been sac\u00adri\u00adfic\u00ading the qual\u00adi\u00adty of our life for the mere quan\u00adti\u00adty of our things.<\/p>\n

We can see and feel how unequal our world had become. In what kind of world do peo\u00adple who get to \u201cplay\u201d for a liv\u00ading are reward\u00aded with lux\u00adu\u00adries like pri\u00advate planes and mul\u00adti\u00adple homes, while, for exam\u00adple, the health\u00adcare work\u00aders on the front lines, like count\u00adless EMT<\/span>\u2019s sav\u00ading lives day after day now, and they can\u00adnot afford to live with\u00adout a hav\u00ading a sec\u00adond job, and they can\u00adnot even afford their very own health insur\u00adance, all while they risk their lives every day to save oth\u00aders? What is wrong with us? How did this happen?<\/p>\n

This is what a cri\u00adsis reveals; and this is the pow\u00ader wield\u00aded by our great\u00adest fear, the fear of death. That ulti\u00admate truth, that we are mor\u00adtal, and the fear we have for our\u00adselves and loved ones, this shat\u00adters our com\u00adpla\u00adcen\u00adcy. It is Spir\u00adit mov\u00ading through and around us, it is our man\u00adi\u00adfest Love for one anoth\u00ader mov\u00ading through us now, and that will sup\u00adport and guide us to a rebirth for our\u00adselves, our com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties, our coun\u00adtry and our world.<\/p>\n

The Real Crisis<\/strong>
\nYes, we are fac\u00ading an extreme test of our bro\u00adken social order; but the very good news is that we made this order and so we can fix it too. But what we must also under\u00adstand is the largest com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty on Earth is LIFE<\/span> itself; and it is formed into a sim\u00adi\u00adlar order of com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties and sys\u00adtems, of intri\u00adcate and mutu\u00adal\u00adly inter\u00adde\u00adpen\u00addent hier\u00adar\u00adchies of seem\u00ading\u00adly count\u00adless life-forms. And we know that life depends upon life. And from the micro\u00adscop\u00adic orders to the largest of life\u00adforms, life has become dev\u00adas\u00adtat\u00aded, life is leav\u00ading the plan\u00adet, and we only need to look in the mir\u00adror to see why.<\/p>\n

As I have say\u00ading for many weeks now with my clients, this pan\u00addem\u00adic is mere\u00adly the very tiny tip of an immense ice\u00adberg that is crash\u00ading into our dear lifeboat in Space, our home plan\u00adet, our plan\u00adet Earth. And the ever-grow\u00ading cri\u00adsis, of which Covid-19 is but a symp\u00adtom, is Cli\u00admate Change. Our work is not mere\u00adly with\u00adin our human fam\u00adi\u00adly. Our great\u00adest respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, most cer\u00adtain\u00adly, is for us to ded\u00adi\u00adcate our\u00adselves to do every\u00adthing we can to pre\u00adserve all life on this plan\u00adet. For our lives depend upon all those oth\u00ader life-forms.<\/p>\n

You are here at the end\u00ading of age; and it is ter\u00adri\u00adble, and it is won\u00adder\u00adful. You are here at this his\u00adtoric moment, when human civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion and life on plan\u00adet earth as we have come to know it is threat\u00adened. What will you do?<\/p>\n

The world is chang\u00ading; and we are the change mak\u00aders. We must choose wise\u00adly, by first help\u00ading one anoth\u00ader in this time of fear and loss. But we must under\u00adstand the solu\u00adtion is not a vac\u00adcine for this virus, but a spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal and social trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of how we care for anoth\u00ader and for our beau\u00adti\u00adful world too.<\/p>\n

When I spoke and wrote years ago about this time being an \u201cend of an Age\u201d, and that the world we knew was going to be end\u00ading start\u00ading in 2008, my clients asked me
\n\u201cwhat does that mean?\u201d I said, \u201cI do not know; all I know is that we will be mov\u00ading into a New World\u201d.<\/p>\n

As we move through it now, it will become clear\u00ader to us what things have to change to pre\u00adserve life and to pre\u00adserve this plan\u00adet. We all real\u00adize how impor\u00adtant this moment is, and in the days and weeks and months and years ahead, we need to be that change that cre\u00adates a New World.<\/p>\n
