Because we are expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading a process, not a moment in time, an eclipse event will last many hours. The moon begins to enter the Penum\u00adbra of the earth\u00ad\u2019s shad\u00adow at around 1:24 pm (all times East\u00adern Day\u00adlight), then into the real shad\u00adow of the Umbra at 2:22 pm with com\u00adplete cov\u00ader\u00adage being attained at 3:22 pm, that is when the Total Eclipse has begun. The eclipse is at it great\u00adest at around 4:13 pm (yes same time as Full Moon), and total\u00adi\u00adty \u201cends\u201d as the Moon begins to move out of the Umbra at 5:02 pm. The Moon pass\u00ades out of the Umbra com\u00adplete\u00adly by 6:02 leav\u00ading it with\u00adin the Penum\u00adbra until it pass\u00ades beyond any shad\u00adow at around 7 pm.<\/p>\n
So the Total Eclipse times are: Penum\u00adbral: 5 hours 36 min, Umbral: 3 hours 39 min, and Total Eclipse 1 hour 40 min.<\/p>\n
Your ques\u00adtion, \u201cWhy does the exact Full Moon and Full Eclipse coin\u00adcide?\u201d (again, the exact moment is only a moment, though per\u00adcep\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly to us it lasts much longer. That is the Total Eclipse runs from 3:22 till 5:02, yet it is only \u201cexact\u201d at 4:13).<\/p>\n
The rea\u00adson the exact moment of the Full Moon and Eclipse being the same comes from the fact that this Eclipse is tak\u00ading place almost exact\u00adly on the South Node of the Moon, (the point at which the Earth\u00ad\u2019s orbit of the Sun and the Moon\u2019s orbit of the Earth meet). The node today is at 23 degrees, 26 min\u00adutes of Sagit\u00adtar\u00adius and the Full Moon is at 24 degrees, 23 min\u00adutes. If the Moon was sev\u00ader\u00adal degrees away from the node, there would still be an eclipse, but the Full Moon and Total Eclipse moments would be far\u00adther apart.<\/p>\n
This is a long eclipse, but not the longest. The Moon is \u201cmov\u00ading faster\u201d now which is a fac\u00adtor deter\u00admined by where it is in its cycle from clos\u00adest to far\u00adthest from the Earth. If it was at it apogee, far\u00adthest, then a slow\u00ader Moon would cre\u00adate the longest eclipse. The Moon was at perigee on June 11, and will be at apogee on June 23. Still it is a longer eclipse than many.<\/p>\n
Spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly, I do not think these \u201cexact\u201d tim\u00adings mat\u00adter so much. I am much more process ori\u00aden\u00adtat\u00aded than event driven\u2026I have wit\u00adnessed the ris\u00ading of an eclipsed Moon with the set\u00adting of the full Sun\u2026Now that is won\u00addrous to behold. Or a Full Moon ris\u00ading at the Win\u00adter Sol\u00adstice. Sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant cer\u00ade\u00admonies and Sacred Ini\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtions are held at these very impor\u00adtant align\u00adments. This par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar eclipse is just such a beau\u00adti\u00adful reminder of the larg\u00ader forces at play around and through us that many in our mod\u00adern world for\u00adget to acknowl\u00adedge, or experience!<\/p>\n
